The Ford S-Max 2.5T of 2006 to 2009 was the Clark Kent of motoring.. A comic-book hero that doubled as a sober-suited executive MPV during the week and responsible family holdall at weekends, but which, thanks to the 217bhp 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine from the contemporary Focus ST under its bonnet, could morph into a hot hatch-baiter capable of 0-62mph in 7.4sec.
Fuel economy has been between 35-40 mpg consistently, while the best ever on a long run was 42mpg. My normal cruising speed on the motorway is 70mph. Towing our 1300kg caravan it does 26-30mpg. Ford's stylish, practical and entertaining S-Max proves that The Blue Oval employs engineers and product planners who are as good as anybody in Japan or Germany. It's the mid-sized motor vehicle that should have replaced the pathetic Ford Windstar in the American market.

The Ford S-MAX is one of the best family cars around, combining a large and practical cabin with a fun and rewarding drive. Admittedly, it lacks some of the high tech toys of its rivals, but Ford's seven-seater leads the way when it comes to handling, refinement and ride quality.
Performance. Ford offers the S-MAX with four engine options – one petrol and three diesel. The 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol is the entry level option it develops 163bhp and is paired to a six-speed manual and front-wheel drive – while the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel is the base unit for the other three options.
